Craig Venter is a giant in genomics and biotech so when I heard he had founded a company focussed on next-gen personal health and longevity I was intrigued to say the least.
When it first launched Health Nucleus was a $25,000 medical test which put it only within the reach of the very wealthy. They have since trimmed the testing package to a more budget friendly option (CORE / HNX?) which goes for a cool $5,000. Whole genome sequencing at other companies itself costs somewhere around $1000.
As exciting as this service seems, it does come with some major criticisms. Any screening test is bound to generate false positives and the harm caused by any subsequent medical intervention based on these false signals must be weighed against the benefit of the testing.
Jane Metcalfe at NEO.LIFE did an excellent interview with Craig Venter on Health Nucleus in 2018, and I highly recommend you check it out if you are interested in the technology behind the service. But as always: Be skeptical.
